PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the maintenance of instrumentation and controls relating to the Eklutna Generation Station (EGS) Plant operations, Wartsila engines, plant DCS, building management system, balance of plant equipment as well as high voltage and low voltage electrical equipment, lighting, electrical controls, installation and troubleshooting.  Ensures plant is operated to meet set standards of efficiency, productivity, and safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

1.       Supports the safe maintenance and operation of reciprocating engines and associated balance of plant equipment.

2.       Safely maintains the plant and precludes the creation or cause of any hazard to the safe maintenance or operation of the facility, such as actions or activities that could have an adverse effect on the health and safety of the public, plant personnel, or other individuals, which includes the failure to act.

3.       Promotes a safety culture in which safety is a value. This culture is based on joint and individual engagement, ownership, and accountability regarding job safety and responsibility to perform work safely and adhere to safe work practices.

4.       Applies safe work practices and participates in the station’s clearance procedures (Lock Out Tag Out – LOTO).

5.       Have the ability to pass and maintain respirator fit testing requirements.

6.       Responds to small ammonia leaks using approved ammonia respirators (Reusable Air Purifying Respirators and Power Air Purifying Respirators - PAPR).

7.       Performs various preventive and corrective maintenance duties as assigned.

8.       Assists with preparation of work packages.

9.       Updates preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance work orders as appropriate.

10.    Assists in the identification of critical spare part procurement and assists in the management of plant inventory.

11.    Notifies the Eklutna Generation Station (EGS) Maintenance Supervisor or Management as soon as possible following any such action or hazard that would affect the safe operation of the facility or could have an adverse effect on the health and safety of the public, plant personnel, or other individuals.

12.    Promptly informs the EGS Maintenance Supervisor of any unexplained changes in one or more plant process variables, or instrument readings and reports any equipment malfunctions or other occurrences that may affect the safety, reliability, or load capability of the unit.

13.    Remains within his or her immediate area of responsibility until released by supervisor.

14.    Reads and interprets mechanical flow diagrams, piping & instrument diagrams, and electrical single-line and wiring diagrams.

15.    Assists staff with the ordering of parts and inventory control.

16.    Performs data input into the work management system.

17.    May on occasion be expected to provide assistance with operational activities such as fuel and ammonia unloading, spare parts delivery and receipt, etc.

18.    May on occasion be expected to provide shift coverage as necessitated for vacation, sick and training relief of power plant operating technicians.

19.    Conducts assigned activities in a professional, businesslike manner and maintains control of station decorum at all times.

20.    May periodically perform some warehousing responsibilities such as receiving and disbursement of parts and supplies.

21.    Performs power block and balance of plant housekeeping duties and may be assigned specific housekeeping responsibilities to preclude the creation of any hazards to the safe operations of the facility.

22.    Performs other miscellaneous duties as directed by their supervisor.

23.    Performs the essential functions of the position in a safe and efficient manner.

ESSENTIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Qualified candidates are required to have:

-       A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of medium and low voltage electrical systems and/or process control systems, motor controls, instrumentation, PLCs and DCS.

-       Ability to pass and maintain respirator fit testing requirements.

-       Ability to pass tests to operate equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, etc.

-       Ability to work alternative work schedules, including 12-hour shifts, based on the operational needs of the plant.

-       A valid Alaska driver’s license and a driving record, which is acceptable and insurable by the Association and the Association’s insurance carrier at standard group rates.

Experience with Wartsila engine control systems is desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

·         The work environment conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

·         This position primarily works in a plant setting; however, this position requires frequent field work in variable weather conditions.  The incumbent must be able to work in variable weather conditions including, but not limited to rain, high winds, temperatures in excess of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, large amounts of snow, possibly over long periods of time and in darkness, etc.

·         Noise level in the work environment is moderate but can be loud in the plant areas.

·         Exposure to fumes, dust, mechanical, electrical and safety hazards.

·         The incumbent must be able to work shifts, under potentially stressful conditions for required plant maintenance and operation; may be required to respond to plant emergencies.

 

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

This position is classified as a non-exempt, represented position, and is eligible for overtime compensation based on both Federal and State of Alaska laws.  All Association employees are expected to work widely varying amounts of either (1) unscheduled overtime such as during power restoration activities; or (2) scheduled overtime required to accomplish special projects.
