GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Medical Assistant (MA), under direction from a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or physician, performs routine clinical and clerical functions to assist providers in the delivery of patient centered medical services for the Psychiatry department within the CMU Health faculty group practices. Patient care activities are identified and staffed based on clinical operations needs and as directed by the Clinical Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists providers and co-workers as part of the health care team.
- Prepares patients for examination by escorting them from the reception area to the exam/treatment room.
- Verifies and documents purpose of visit, vital signs, allergies, administration of medications/tests, medication history, and patient instructions according to current CMU Health standards (i.e.: instruct to undress from waste up and gown when indicated, remove shoes for diabetic foot exam).
- Prepares, cleans and maintains exam and treatment rooms according to proper infection control standards,
- Assists with clinic flow to ensure efficiency. Seeks out other tasks to assist with patient flow.
- Performs point-of-care laboratory and diagnostic procedures according to protocol.
- Orders, stocks and prepares clinical supplies and equipment as assigned.
- Performs quality controls according to established procedures.
- Performs instrument processing to include cleaning and sterilization of instruments according to protocol, as assigned.
- Administers non-dose dependent medications and injections according to current standards and after successful completion of documented competencies.
- Reviews after Visit Summary instructions with patients prior to check-out.
- Assist with quality improvement projects as requested.
- Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: High School Diploma or GED and Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program which reflects the training outlined for basic competence by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) preferred or relevant experience.
- Licensure: Certified preferred
- Valid CPR certification is required. Accepted certifications include American Red Cross: BLS for Healthcare Professionals or American Heart Association BLS. Certificates must remain current.
- Experience: At least one year Ambulatory/Office experience.
- Aptitude: Understanding and appreciation of the medical education/academic process with an intrinsic desire to enhance said process through direct educational involvement and support.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that encourage harmonious working relationships with individuals in the health and educational settings.
- Associates degree as a Medical Assistant preferred.
- Electronic Medical Record experience preferred.
- Registered as a Medical Assistant preferred.
