Communications Associate (Req. #2278) (Full Time)
Location: Washington DC
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seems a Communications Associate to keep the Science Advances Press Package (“AdPak”) operating smoothly and quickly, as well as acting as the initial contact for reporters and PIOs related to Science Advances. The CA will ideally bring to the table some knowledge of effective multimedia and social media strategies, in order to support team efforts to develop better communications strategies. It is imperative that this position be filled with someone with some experience in the communications field and with strong organizational skills.
Major duties and responsibilities:
- Prepares weekly Science Advances Press Package (AdPak) – online & email versions
- Provides essential support to the Science Advances Writer II, the Science Press Package Director, and other team colleagues
- Recruits and seeks appropriate permissions to use multimedia to help convey forthcoming content in Science Advances
- Answers phones & handles inquiries from the press related to Science Advances
- Assists reporters and public information officers
- Notifies Science Advances authors and their public information officers about upcoming content in the journal
- Promotes Science Advances content via social media (including Twitter)
- Assists with analyzing and compiling media placement reports, as needed
- Provides other administrative support, as needed
Minimum qualifications:
- Extensive university or college-level training leading to a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- One to two years of work experience in a news organization, public relations office, or a position with extensive public contact
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience or at least familiarity with multimedia and social media tools preferred Word processing, Excel experience, database management, and basic HTML preferred (Dreamweaver experience strongly preferred – training available)
