Communications Associate, Science Press Package (Req. #2468) (Full Time)
Location: Washington DC
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a Communications Associate to work to keep the SciPak operating smoothly and quickly, as well as acting as the initial contact for reporters and PIOs related to Science. It is imperative that this position be filled with someone with some experience in the communications field and with strong organizational skills.
Major duties and responsibilities:
- Prepares weekly Science Press Package (SciPak) – online & email versions
- Creates and updates media lists
- Answers phones & handle inquiries from the press related to Science
- Corresponds with reporters, authors and PIOs
- Analyzes and compiles news clippings
- Provides administrative support, as needed
- Conveys content of stories in Science (science communications; verbal and written skills)
- Enforces Science’s embargo policy (master policy, render decisions, “just say no”)
- Assists with Science and Science Translational Medicine telephone conferences for reporters
- Verbally summarizes Science manuscripts in lay language
- Helps maintain the SciPak Twitter account
Minimum qualifications:
- Extensive university or college-level training leading to a Bachelor’s degree
- One to two years of work experience in a news organization, public relations office, or a position with extensive public contact
- Strong organizational skills and some project management experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated writing skills
- Strong organizational skills and some project management experience

- Social media account maintenance experience
- Dreamweaver and Photoshop experience, basic HTML knowledge
- Word processing, Excel experience, database management
