General Function:

 

Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority automobiles, trucks, buses, heavy and light equipment, both diesel and gasoline powered; and other mechanical equipment.

Accountability:

 

This position reports to the Foremen and does not exercise any supervision.

Position Requirements:

 

  1. Performs simple tasks of repair and replacement without supervision and learns to perform more complex tasks under supervision of management and/or higher classified employees. 
  2. Must have the capacity and ambition to learn and progress to higher classifications. 
  3. Maintains all Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority owned mechanical equipment, conducts any necessary preventive maintenance activity.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to read and understand work procedures using repair manuals, charts and basic electrical schematics.
  5. Operates vehicles and equqipment, uses lift of jack to analyze, test, inspect and determine cause of malfunction.  Uses mechanics hand tools and power equipment to remove, disassemble and repair, rebuild, or replace defective parts or units and various other shop equipment, including but not limited to bus lifts, floor jacks, power and hand tools, steam cleaner, sand blaster and parts washer.
  6. Maintains records of all vehicle activity performed.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the Foremen.

Requirements:

 

·         High School diploma, GED or Trade School Dipploma.

·         Must maintain a valid CDL and be able to operate Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority vehicles.

·         3 to 5 years employment involving the repair and maintenance of highway and other public agency vehicles and equipment, including diesel engines are required for the position.

·         Must be experienced in the use of drills, cutting tools, welding equipment and other related repair equipment.

·         Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and equipment usual to automotive and heavy equipment repairs. 

·         Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines and diesel engines.

·         Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

·         Ability of read, write, report and interpret documents such as rules and regulations related to the transportation industry.

·         Possess oral and written communications skills that can be clearly articulated and understood are essential.

Responsible for contributing to a safe and secure work environment.  Is cognizant of surroundings and acts in a safe manner at all times.  Is knowledgeable of and adheres to OSHA, GBT and other safety standards, directives and advisories, both written and verbal.  Uses safety equipment and protective clothing as appropriate and necessary.  Maintains good housekeeping habits in work area to avoid injury to self or others.  Immediately reports to supervisor or risk manager any safety or security issue, and makes recommendations for improvement.  Observes building access restrictions and locks doors when not present.  Knows the nearest two safety exits and participates in safety drills.
